defending human rights

Chitra Nagarajan is involved in movements against fundamentalism and for LGBTQIA rights and climate, economic, gender, and racial justice. Doing so has involved the following actions:

  • raising awareness of human rights with vulnerable and socially excluded civilians and supporting them to conduct advocacy with those in power;

  • engaging with soldiers, police officers, and community militia members on human rights, international humanitarian law, and civilian protection and harm mitigation in operations via training and advocacy;

  • facilitating community dialogues between civilians and security forces on civilian protection and human rights;

  • mapping actors engaged in feminist macro-economic policy influencing on the African continent;

  • campaigning on access of migrant gender-based violence survivors to protection and safety;

  • conducting disability audit of programming and developing programming options for better disability inclusion;

  • researching the impacts of anti-rights mobilisations on LGBTQIA, sex worker, and women’s rights and movements;

  • supporting women’s rights organisations to learn better practices on conflict transformation;

  • mapping the intersections of LGBTQIA rights and women, peace and security and identifying potential entry points;

  • integrating trauma and safeguarding into health systems strengthening;

  • supporting, mentoring, and accompanying African women’s funds and networks on safeguarding;

  • supporting gender-based violence services to adapt to COVID-19 realities so they were able to continue providing services during this time of heightened violence in ways that mitigated infection risk; and

  • being active on Boards of human rights organisations focused on migrants, women’s, and LGBTQIA rights.
